Letters have now gone home to Cubs, Scouts and Explorers about Summer Camp 2012, which will be, as usual, the first week of the school summer holidays, Saturday 21st July to Sunday 29th July. This year we shall be returning to Huish Woods in Somerset, a site we last visited in 2008.

Planning and sending out the information for this camp has been delayed for a number of reasons and we now require a speedy response from you in order to book the site and secure this with a deposit and then we can commence the planning of the activities for camp. The information sheet also contains details of the help required from parents at camp, last year we took more young people away to summer camp than ever before but had far fewer offers of help, therefore this year, as a condition of your child attending camp, parents will be required to assist in at least one of the tasks.

Scouts are considering running a Winter Camp in January/February 2012. The dates have not been finalised as I shall not confirm the booking until I know if there is sufficient interest to justify running a winter camp in 2012.

The three possible weekends are

27th – 29th January               3rd – 5th February                10th – 12th February

For the past two years we have run a Winter Camp and on both occasions far fewer Scouts came to camp than had initially indicated an interest and subsequently the Scout Group had to subsidise both camps. Therefore before I make any confirmed booking I need to that there is support for running a camp.

All Scouts have been given a camp letter asking if they wish to attend a Winter Camp and I need this returned to me as soon as possible. Once I know if there is enough interest I shall book a provisional date with the camp site, I will then require payment for camp in full within 14 days to confirm the booking. All payments will be non-returnable unless the camp is cancelled.

Summer Camp is fast approaching. All the activities for camp have been booked and the programme for the week away has now been finalised. If you have not yet booked your place at camp it is now to late as we are unable to make ammendments to many of the bookings for either the week at camp or the Beaver weekend.

All those attending should now have had the Kit List and Consent Forms sent home. The consent form should be signed and returned to Bill Denver, along with the balance owing and for those parents joining us at camp, a photocopy of your CRB, by Wednesday 29th June.

On the original camp information sheet many parents made offers of help either on the first or last weekend at camp or putting the equipment away on our return. If you made an offer of help I shall be writing to you in the near future to confirm that you are still available, particularly for putting the equipment away.

Over the weekend of 13th -15th May 12 of our Explorers, and two adults, spent the weekend at Selsey in West Sussex. We stayed in caravans in the Bunn Leisure Site using the Sun holiday offer. We arrived at about 7.00pm on Friday and quickly settled into our accomodation for the weekend. We had fish & chips for tea, then a look around the site before going back to one of the caravans to play games and have hot chocolate.

Saturday morning after breakfast we went to the leisure facilities, a pool with slides and a lazy river, some of us went into the sauna and steam rooms. We then all went ‘Zorbing’ in hugh plastic balls on water, it was great fun.  After lunch we had a look around the nearby town of Chichester. We then went to the beach to play football with a ball one of the boys had bought in Chichester, first kick of the ball it went into the sea and we all watched as it quickly drifted out to sea and beyond our reach. Dinner was chinese take away, eaten with chopsticks. Some of us then went to the ammusment arcade on site and others went for a walk along the beach.

A late rise on Sunday and a quick breakfast before we went back to the pool for the morning followed by brunch, tidy up of the caravans and then headed back to Tackley.

It is important that we are well represented at this event, so keep the date free and we will give you more information as soon as we have it.

This weekend our Explorers and some of the older Scouts took part in an expedition and overnight camp at Horley Scout Site near Banbury as part of their Global Challenge, for many of them the final challenge needed to complete their Chief Scout Award.

They set off on Saturday morning in bright sunshine and in good spirits. They didnt get lost but occasionaly were not exactly sure where they were. As the day progressed there were some tired legs but the tiredness was soon forgotten when they could once again see the campsite. After dinner of pasta carbonara they joined the other Scouts on the camp for a campfire and learned some new songs, then sat round the fire with hot chocolate before going to bed.

Sunday morning was wet and following breakfast they cleared the camp and headed home one challenge closer to gaining the Chief Scout Award.

The Chief Scout Award is a tremendous achievement by the individuals as we have never have any Scout in our group gain this award before.

Congratulations to all of them.

Ellie’s bag was so big…..

……….that 14 Scouts hid behind it. With Chloe lying on the floor and looking directly at the luggage 14 Scouts hid behind the bags and not be seen, and this was just a weekend camp. Over the weekend of 21st to 23rd January we held our Winter Camp at Youlbury Scout Site.

We arrived at the camp in between 5 and 6 pm and we waited for everyone to arrive and then we decided what rooms we were all sleeping in. I was in a room with Ciaran, Jake, Robert and Louie. After dinner we went back to our rooms for a while and then we were called to line up in the hallway. Bill put us in teams of four and we played a game called logo. After that we had hot chocolate with marshmallows in it until it was 9.30 and we went to bed.

In the morning we had an English breakfast and then we dressed up in appropriate clothes to go out and we went to a thing called the Big Swing. After that we went back for lunch. After lunch we went back and the power went out so we went outside and played some games. When the power came back on we played Giant Jenga then had hot chocolate and went to bed.

On Sunday after breakfast we went to the climbing wall at Youlbury. We walked to the centre to get our harnesses and helmets on, and then walked to the climbing wall which took us about five minutes.  When we arrived there our instructor showed us how to use the rope supporting the climber. There were three jobs to do beside and on the wall – these were the climber, the smiler and the puller everyone got a turn at these jobs. Only six people got to the top of the climbing wall and that was Ciaran, Rhianna, Calum, Jamie, Mark & Thomas.

After everyone had been on the climbing wall their hands were frozen. After two hours on the climbing wall we walked back to the centre where we took off our harnesses and helmets and walked back to the cabin to have our roast lunch and to defrost. (!)

After we went out climbing we came back and unfortunately I had 3 letters on the wall so I had to do the Sunday roast cleaning up. Our bedroom had a tea towel fight with Calum, then we waited for the parents to arrive and then my dad picked me up and we went for a coffee.

Over the weekend of 16th – 17th January the Tackley Explorers perfored a dance routine for the Tackley Review Show on Saturday and Sunday evening.

Some of our Explorers decided to take part in the village show and put together a dance routine which they selected the music for and choreographed themselves. After a couple of night rehearsals they were ready to hit the stage. They were also invited to organise the raffle for Sundays performance with the proceed going into their funds.
